Variety Selection

Plants that make fruits require sun to make them, so melons in particular tend to be long-season crops, with some requiring more than 100 frost-free days—preferably warm days. Particularly if you live in the northern parts of the country, you should choose a variety that will produce ripe fruit within your growing season with some room to spare.

Another consideration is disease resistance. Watermelons are pretty much resistant to bacterial wilt, but all varieties of muskmelon are susceptible. Powdery mildew and mosaic virus can pose a problem with melons, but resistant cultivars are available.

In New Hampshire, I have successfully grown Moon and Stars and Sugar Baby watermelons, and Hale’s Best and Green Machine melon varieties.
